Hippocrates New Centre

Plans for the new Hippocrates Centre

Hippocrates currently operates out of extremely cramped premises which restrict the provision of high quality care.  New premises are essential to develop the direct service provision as well as creating the opportunities to achieve greater involvement of parents into the rehabilitation process by adapting multifunctional therapy programmes.

This capital appeal is needed because Hippocrates can neither maintain its current level of service delivery in its current building, nor attempt to meet the increasing demand for the rehabilitation that it offers. The complex needs of chronically sick or disabled children require complex solutions. The cornerstone of meeting them is a multi-disciplinary facility that will offer children a complete rehabilitation programme.  Additional funds are urgently needed to bring this vision into reality.

Tony Hawks, writer and comedian, has sponsored Hippocrates from it's very beginning and as he says:

“We are at a crossroads now. The need for the new centre to grow is overwhelming. Moldovan politicians are waking up to the fact that this kind of healthcare should be provided by the state – but a walk around the Children’s Hospital in Chisinau will reveal just how much money needs to be spent elsewhere – and the government just doesn’t have the money”

To date we have purchased the land, paid for drawings, laid the foundations and started the main building work - but funds are urgently needed for the main construction on Phase 1 to progress further.

Phase 1 will consist of four therapy rooms so that the various disciplines are not getting in each others way (or working in the staff kitchen as at present), a large therapy hall and meeting room with a welcoming reception area for the children and their families.

Phase 2 will consist of a hydro-therapy pool, toy library, orthoses prep area and training room.

The new Centre will make a real difference to hundreds of severely disabled and chronically ill children’s lives. Key objectives are as follows:

  • To improve access to a wider range of therapeutic care and family support services - by building a multidisciplinary therapy centre, children and parents will have a single purpose built premises.
  • Create a child-friendly, welcoming environment in which disabled children and parents will have an improved and more integrated assessment of their needs
  • Avoiding duplication and unnecessary delays
  • Avoiding multiple visits and the need to retell their story many times
  • Avoiding isolation of children and parents (children benefit from being with other disabled children realising that their difficulties are not unique. Parents see they are not alone)
  • Ensure that children and parents have their needs met more rapidly, appropriately and efficiently.  Different therapies will be conducted in separate and specially equipped rooms, so providing personal dignity and privacy for every child
  • Increase the range of available therapies to include Hydrotherapy, Portage and more intensive Speech and Language therapy
  • Ensure that therapies or referrals for surgical interventions are introduced at the right time
  • Support more children and their parents - with larger premises and by structuring visits to the Centre more efficiently, we will be able to increase the overall number of treatments.
  • Specialists will be together under one roof; while a child is receiving therapy a parent may be able to consult a social worker
  • Create more training facilities for specialist staff and parents. Already known for being a centre of excellence, practises can be shared and transferred
  • Lay a firm foundation from which this model can be replicated across the region
