Sisters of St Elisabeth

The Sisters provide a long lost parent's love

In late 2011, ChildAid were delighted to confirm its support for the work of the Sisters of St Elisabeth Convent just outside Minsk, Belarus.

The Convent takes its name from the Holy Martyr Grand Duchess Elisabeth and was founded in 1999.

The aim of the Sisters is to provide spiritual and social help for the sick and the suffering and they carry our their ministry in many places including the National Psychiatric Hospital, a tuberculosis centre, and a drug/alcohol rehabilitation programme.

ChildAid's support is concentrated on their work in a nearby orphanage for children and young people with severe disabilities. Nearly 200, mostly orphans, live here and suffer from a range of difficulties including Down's syndrome, birth traumas, congenital physical disorders and accompanying internal illnesses.

Some of these children are bedridden and their life expectancy is short. The Sisters bring some comfort knowing that the children's pure souls will be with God eternally where there is no more sickness, grief or sorrow.

Future Plans

In conjunction with the orphanage staff and the Sisters, ChildAid are seeking to offer further facilities in the well-maintained grounds of the orphanage by providing a new playground for the children.

In addition, a ramp is needed so that the bedridden children on the first floor can be free from the confines of their rooms and enjoy fresh air and the sounds of the many birds in the grounds.

The ministry of Mary and Martha. The SistersĀ  combine Mary's ministry of the word of God with prayer and consolation, with the way of Martha by serving God through helping the sick and the helpless.
