Hippocrates bring hope to the hopeless
Hippocrates is a Children's Health Centre which improves the life quality of chronically ill children from socially vulnerable families. The Centre is now called The Tony Hawks Centre, in recognition of the wonderful support provided by the UK comedian and radio personality who substantially funded the origianal and now the new rehabilitation centre from his book and film "Playing the Moldovans at Tennis".
By working with parents of young children, Hippocrates are able to give a hope to the family and prevent the child being abandoned to a life locked away in an institution.
Through rehabilitation and parental education Hippocrates facilitates the children's integration into society. The aim is to optimise the child’s potential for the future through physical control and development of their young bodies.
In December 2011 the authorities carried out a thorough audit of their activities. They received an overall score of 98% (making them officially recognised as one of the finest NGO's of its type in the country). The 2% shortfall from perfection was the problem of working in a very restricted space.
One parents says: "You are saving lives. You make tomorrow happy, especially for our children"
Future Plans
ChildAid is seeking to relocate Hippocrates to a larger, purpose-built premises so they can help more children with enhanced services and with successful integration into their local communuities. The current premises are far too small and restrict the provision of high quality care.
Work has started on a 2-phase development on land we have recently purchased. Additional funds are urgently needed to bring this vision into reality - find out more >>
Catalina was born prematurely and has cerebral palsy
Visiting Hippocrates four times a year since her birth has given Catalina a real hope. Without such care she would be barely able to move. Now she has freedom in her legs and hands so that she can even dress herself. This has also given her great confidence - including recently being interviewed by a pop star to raise awareness of disability in Moldova
Current Services
Following a specific donation we are able to help children who require life saving heart operations and have contributed to the cost of such treatment to a small number of children whose parents were unable to afford the operations. We anticipate further requirements for such support.
